The post that shoudda been...
It takes time to figure things out for yourself.
Me reckons that be why we trust the word of "experts" to tell us what's goin on or to explain things that just might seem too much trouble to figure out for ourselves. The popular belief is that we oughtta believe what they have to say; after all they spend all their time studying and researching and getting the in depth information that takes years to acquire, right?
Now if your sick you go to a doctor; that just makes sense, but Me ain't to certain that all the things we swallow as truth be in fact true.
Last weekend me did something both a little stupid (don't be surprised; even the Scary Monster has his moments) and oxymoronically, intelligent.
Me went to a different source for information.
Sometimes the Experts are little more than paid mouthpieces. Sometimes their funding depends on reinforcing the popularity of their position and the acceptance of their findings.
Me went for a walk. Me traversed the hills and farms of a nearby town and talked to the people who live there and work the land year after year. The stupid thing was that me did this alone through the snow, over mountain trails that are unmarked and occasionally treacherous. Although Me didn't think it so dangerous at the time me won't be so cavalier in the future.
Me wanted to find out more about global warming and see if the discovery channel was pulling my leg.
Over two days of visiting farmers, shopkeepers and the local volunteer fire dept. The main feeling was that winters were shorter and less severe than in the past. The milk producers were happy about the deal, because cows are really sensitive creatures and a long harsh winter always incurs loss for them. The farmers who tended fields were happier about the longer growing season, but upset about the loss of snow melt and the increase of drought like conditions.
No one Me talked too was overly concerned with global warming, some of them laughed about it, but they did notice distinct changes in the way the seasons shaped themselves year after year.
Me didn't get any answers about the changing world, but me had a great time tryin.
P.S. That lady deleted me comments offa her blog. What a spoilsport!
Me no stop askin questions.

People are having the wrong debate in regards to Global Warming. They are too concerned with the cause and not concerned enough with how to alter it. When a house is burning down you worry about how it started AFTER the fire is out.
My personal belief on GW is that it is real and it is happening and is influenced by man's presence. I mean CO2 is the main cause of GW and what do we exhale? The current population of the Earth is greater than it has ever been before and the amount of trees is lower than ever before and we are saving every species from extinction whether they are supposed to go extinct or not. In all honesty the single greatest thing accelterating GW is probably the actions we take to save the planet. Earth knows how to balance itself and will do it one way or another.
P.S.- STOMP!
Kanrei you be diggin that stomp ain't you~ LOL
Me don't know enough to intelligently comment on GW, but me thinks that living a cleaner existance without creating unecessary waste is a really great start. There are factories in Japan that are doing amazing things with recycling
http://www.japanfs.org/en/jfs/event/eco-pro2006/report2006_gpn.html
others are replanting trees to maintain the balance with which they use paper products in their offices.
Me don't know how much is hype and Me hasn't been able to find anything on european and american manufacturing, but Me is still looking. Me feels one thing be for certain, if we don't start taking better care of the place the landlord is gonna evict us.
Scary, I guess I'm one of the few people that believe global warming is a crock. Weather has always evolved wether because of our existence on this planet or other factors. I do think we abuse the planet and it is on the individual level to stop, right down to recycling responsibilites and replanting. It's like all this hub bub about Web 2.0. What are they talking about? The web evolves as more people attempt to use it. End of subject.
The problem is that we have a couple of Zax in this debate. Is it man made? Is it natural? Why can't it be both? I see it as a natural cycle that is influenced by what happens. More CO2 is causing problems- there is no debate. THe debate is what is the cause and what can be done if anything? The cause is simple- 6 billion people exhaling plus all the species we save from extinction. Species disappear every day, but we feel guilt when they go and try to stop it from happening. What if that species is supposed to go and, by saving it we have only added to the problem.
Anyone who has more than one kid is not serious about saving the planet.
There's an old adage: "Waste not, want not." I used to get so irritated with my mother and grandma saying that. Now I see what they meant.
I do think we as a species are contributing to GW. Some of it, e.g., there are too many of us, we can't help. All of the conservation and remedial measures we can take will surely help. In the long run, however, Mother Nature will take care of it, as she always does. She can be a harsh mistress, but she does whatever it takes to get the job done.
Scary, I think it's a crock that that lady deleted your comments. Why open a topic ripe for debate if you're going to forbid the debate? I hate it when things are either all black or all gray, with no room for any colors creeping in between the lines. I want everything in Technicolor, damn it.
We could help there being too many of us. Birth control and education. Also, stop rewarding people for having so many kids and actually start removing those tax breaks after the second child. Every couple having one kid would reduce the population. Every couple having two kids keeps it the same. The only reason population is exploding is because people are having so many.
The earth goes through cycles of weather- it always has...something killed off the dinosaurs- I can't say I'm sorry they no longer exist! (except for you SM?)
Perhaps one day there will be little mice who have evolved into Bloggers- and they will say, "Something killed the humans off- can't say I miss them!"
I try to recycle- keep the heating in my house to a minimum- not speed too much and waste my gas...
I think we have to be responsible for things we can fix or change. I will do what I need to do- but not because I'm terrified of Global Warming...
but because those things make sense to me.
And I think it wise to talk to the older people- and the farmers...they are REAL- and have honest experience. The people on TV are paid to read you information- some of which is questionable~
What could have been her motivation for deletion? I don't get it.
Kanrei's first post has it right. The icecaps are melting. The winters are shorter. The sea level is rising. Politicians sticking their fingers in their ears and singing 'La la la, I can't hear you' won't change that.
We spend a lot of time worrying that it's our fault, and maybe it is, but that's a debate for later. Why the house is burning isn't important right now. What's important is how are we going to deal with it?
If we can't stop it (as seems likely) we'll have to learn to live with it.
And yes, you have to be careful of experts. They're not all independent.
Me be truly astounded!!!
Me didn't expect the response me got from all you. Me reckons that people are thinking about global warming almost as much as taxes.
Kanrei has an excepionally valid point about putting the cart before the horse and Me suggests you read it. very cool, me friend.
Serena and Mayden remind us that it's so important not to be wasteful, that we are merely the caretakers of the place and that Momma nature will eventually level the playing field.
Corn dog offers us a different take on things. Good!! Me actually needs to be the devils advocate from time to time, just to see how people really feel about the subject.
Romulus Crow~ welcome. Me be happy that you have come to me home. Your comments are always insightful.
Me promises to keep me fingers outta Me ears.
littlebirdblue ~ her reason for deleting Me comments were that she has a debilitating sickness and didn't want me bothering her. I agree with serena that things need to be discussed, in technicolor of course.
BTW the woman does write some decent poetry so you might want to drop by and ask her for yourself.
She just was in over her head when she decided to STOMP with me.
hugs and stomps and love the people around you,
Scary Monster.
I interupt this regularly schedueled program to say:
Happy Valentine's Day Scary Monster!!
xo
My sister says Mother Earth will kill us before she allows us to kill her, and I think she has a point. While some species have become extinct, several new species have been discovered recently, and it turns out a few more thought to be extinct simply moved.
Too bad for that Southern writer. She may not know it yet, but she'll miss you.
