Filling an empty room

Me is constantly wondering about the whys and wherefores of the necessity to be filling out lives with chit-chat and clutter. Why is we always needing to take perfectly good spaces and impose a dependence of external influence upon them. What is it about an empty space that makes one feel despair. Think about how we fill our lives with noise and distraction. We fill our inner lives with addictions to anything that will keep us from looking at what is truly inside us. We use work, sex, drugs, music, writing, anything to prevent us from facing the absurdity of nothingness and give us a few moments of escape from the quiet that resides inside us all. Me be sitting here in front of a computer screen tossing me thoughts out into the blogworld, so me be dependent on amusement too. Me looks at the world around me and sees so much evidence of our follies. Monumental structures and enterprises devoted to distracting us and maintaining a steady flow of stimuli so that we never gain a foothold on the path to self exploration. Me is not so sure that nature abhors a vacuum, Me is starting to think that she is trying to return to it. Me is still filled with contradictions for Me is thinking that quiet may be infinitely more deafening than all of the ruckus we make when we try to make sense.

Me not quite silent enough yet

Mostly I agree, but I find writing, music, and certain other forms of art actually makes you look deep within yourself rather than distracting you from yourself. I would not say the articles I write so muc, but my poems and fiction certainly forces me to explore who I am and I do not always like what I find. This post for example is more reflective than distracting. Great work, you made me think when I came here for distraction...

SM-
The absurdity of nothingness is diminished by the power of connection.
We reach out- write- read- build structures...to connect- not to distract.
But we have to be careful not to trade a hand shake for a phone call- or a tete-a-tete for an email. We need hugs- we need touch- we need connection :)

Ok- and sometimes we need distraction too :)

I'm thankful that I've never needed the stimulii that a lot of other people seem to need. I love touching base online, of course, but I'm usually happiest when I'm alone and it's quiet.

Nature, alas, will return to the vacuum in her own good time.

Excellent post, SM -- thought provoking and fodder for self-examination.

Fair rebuttals, all. Me is still in contemplation over the ideas Me presents here and your input is well considered. Much learning to do has Me.
Your contributions are the only way for Me ideas and thoughts to battle through the earth and into the light.
Me thanks you
